第1部 13.駅から会社まで
やっと解放されたぞ。
I'm finally saved.
さあ，会社へ急ごう。
Now to hurry to work.
おおぜいの人がそれぞれの職場へ行く。
Everyone is going to his or her place of work.
みんな環境が違うし，運命も違う。だが，一つだけ同じことがある。
Their environments and their destinies are all different, but they have one thing in common.
だれもが一生懸命に生きようとしていることだ。
They're all trying to survive as best they can.
人間は何ゆえに創造され，何ゆえに生き，何ゆえに死ぬのか？
It makes you wonder why man is created, why he lives, and why he dies.
このおおぜいの人々は生きるための真の目的を考えているのだろうか？
I wonder if all of these people ever think about their real purpose in life?
人間とは何か，ということを考えているのだろうか？
Are they wondering what man really is?
明朝の，この人の流れは，けさと同じではない。
Tomorrow morning, this stream of people won't be the same as today.
そして100年後には，この数千名の人々は一人残らず，地上から姿を消しているはずだ。
A hundred years from now not a single one of these several thousand people will remain.
この世界を去って，どこへ行くのだろう？
Where will they go?
ぼくにもわからない。
It's not for me to know.
太陽はさんさんと輝き，天，われらを祝福したもう――か。
The sun is shining brightly. Heaven has bestowed upon us her blessing.
ありゃ，もう９時だ。
Oh no, it's already nine o'clock.
しまった！ 間に合わないぞ。
I won't make it in time.
走ろう。
I'd better run.
急げ，急げ。
Hurry up, hurry up.
どうせ遅刻だろうが，なるべく早く行かなくちゃ。
Even though I'm going to be late anyway, I still have to hurry.
どのエレベーターに乗ろうかな？
I wonder which elevator I should take?
そうだ，あのエレベーターに乗ろう。
I know, I'll take that elevator.
この調子だと，事務所のタイムレコーダーのカードは9時4分と記入されるだろうな。
If I keep going at this rate, I can punch in at four minutes after nine.
5分間の遅れか。しかたがないや。
I'm five minutes late, but I couldn't help it.
けさの最初のバスに乗れなかったんだものな。
After all, I missed the first bus this morning.
