それにしても日本人は英語がへただなあ。
Even so, Japanese are pretty poor in English.
一流大学を出た，かなり教養のある人でも英文が満足に書けないんだ。
Even educated people with degrees from top universities aren't able to write acceptable English.

I wonder why?
そういうぼくだって，日本語はあまりうまくないんだから，大きなことは言えないが――。

As far as Japanese conversation goes, though, I have no trouble.
これは”慣れ”の問題だろうな。
All it takes is a little getting used to.

English spoken by Japanese is so terrible.
発音はダメだし，なんと言おうとしているのか，わからない場合が多すぎる。
The pronunciation is poor and more often than not it's impossible to understand what they're trying to say.
彼らは，もっと考え方を変えて，頭の中で翻訳をやらずに，最初から英語で考えるようにすべきだ。
Japanese have to change their way of thinking and stop translating in their minds. They should think in English from the very start.
同じ東洋人でも，東南アジアの人たちは大体に英語を達者にしゃべるんだ。
Most Southeast Asians are able to speak English quite well.
言葉というものをむずかしく考えないからだろう。
It's probably because they don't think too deeply about a language.
ところが日本人はやたらと文法にこだわりすぎるんだ。
Japanese, on the other hand, are too concerned with grammar.
肌で英語を吸収しないで，頭の中でまず文法の規則を考えようとする。
Rather than trying to absorb English through the skin, they spend all of their time thinking about grammatical rules.
そして口語体と文語体をごたまぜにし，英語でも米語でもない独特な日本式発音でやっている。
Then they mix up literary and colloquial styles and create a unique Japanese style of pronunciation that is neither British nor American English.
学校の英語教育のあり方も根本的に改めて，もっと口語英語を主体にした，生きた英語を教えるべきだ。
The very foundations of English language education need to be re-examined and spoken English should be taught instead. That would be more useful.
