人間は六感を持つものではない

人間が発達し始めた初期には、人間は自分たちの生きている世界を五感のあらわれにすぎないものとして認めていたのですけれども、
In the early ages of human development, man had been content to accept the world in which he lived as a mere five-sense manifestation.

利口になるにつれて人間は自分の周囲に起こる説明しがたい作用、すなわち外界にたいする知覚力を超越するかのように見える用に気づきました。
But as he grew wiser, he noticed actions taking place about him that were difficult to explain - actions that seemed to transcend these powers of outer perception.

自分の見た物に首をかしげながら、しかもこの現象を説明する肉体的感覚器官を符たないために、人間はこれを自分で考えついた領域、すなわち第六感ということにしてしまいました！
Puzzled by what he beheld, yet having no physical sense to account for this phenomenon, he relegated it to a realm of his own invention ... the sixth sense!

その頃は（現在もそうですが）人間の感覚器官で説明できないものすべてを、この漠然とした神秘的な分野に投げ込んでしまったのです。
He was then content (and still is), to consign everything not explained by his senses to this indefinable, mysterious plane.

テレパシーが第六感であるという古くさい理論にもとづいた私の初期の研究は結局無意味でした。
My early studies, based on the antiquated theory of telepathy being a sixth sense, led nowhere.

注意深い観察の後に私にわかったことは、この理論と同じような考え方を応用している他の研究者たちも望ましい結果を得ていなかったということです。
After careful observation, I found that others using this same trend of reasoning were not attaining the desired result, either.

生来私は、なにか自然界の宇宙的な法則に一致しないものがそそぎ込まれていると感じていました。
Innately I felt something was being injected which did not align itself with natural, or universal law.

そこで自然界に目を移して、その活動を調べたのです。
So I turned to nature and studied her actions.

すると、人間の推理力が干渉しないその自然界で私が発見したのは、万物は調和して働いているという事実でした。
Here, where the reasoning mind of man did not interfere, I found all things working in harmony.

現象界でさまざまの姿をあらわしている生命体を注意深く観察して、ある正確な原型に従って働いている一つの英知すなわち法則が存在するにちがいないということに私は気づいたのです。
As I thoughtfully observed life expressing in its many forms of manifestation, I realized there must be an intelligence, or a law, that operated according to an exact pattern.
