The orange tree, wafting its perfume on-the southern breeze, need not delve into a laboratory analysis of atmospheric conditions to know that 6nly in the milder climes will it survive.

This tender species depends upon natural law to insure its continuation;

so nature does not capriciously broadcast its seed in frigid zones, she sows them where the sun is warm.

Lifting my eyes to the hillside, I discovered feats of engineering that would have been impossible for man to duplicate not too many centuries ago.

Growing straight and strong, a sturdy oak clung to the precipitous slope.

Nature had not used a slide rule to calculate at which angle the roots should imbed themselves to stabilize the tree's weight;

they had instinctively grown in the right direction and to the proper depth.

And I knew that if I were to take a saw and cut a large limb from that tree, nature would immediately compensate for the shift in weight by sending out new roots to bring the tree once more into perfect balance.

The wild poppy growing at its feet, and the clumps of sagebrush dotting the slope, all bore witness to this same engineering principle.

My gaze slowly traveled from wonder to wonder until it rested on the grass at my feet.

Here, too, was the miracle of creation.

As I stooped to study the slender, green blade, I realized humbly that no man on earth could create it.

Nature alone had germinated the seed, guided the spear through the hard crust of the soil to the light of the sun, and brought it to full maturity.

Surely, all I beheld around me was orderly, directed, and controlled intelligence in operation.

There was no haphazard growth.

Each minute detail had been carefully worked out.

The orange tree in its native clime, the oak tree clinging to the precipitous slope, and the blade of grass at my feet were all guided and given being by the one Cosmic Intelligence.

I then turned to a closer observation of the birds, insects and animals.

In all three I found the same marvels of engineering.

It is interesting to note that much of our present architectural knowledge has been acquired from studying the principles employed by nature.

In fact, man thinks so highly of the engineering ability of the industrious beaver, that he now parachutes them in pairs into inaccessible territory so they will build dams to help control the disastrous floods which rush down to the lower valleys each spring.

In this way, the little animals render man and nature an invaluable service;

for where their dams dot the mountain streams, floods and soil errosion are cut to a minimum.

Yet they do not use mathematical calculations to estimate the stress the rushing water will exert upon the finished dam.

nor do they need mechanical tools to anchor it securely or build it to the prescribed height.

Here, as in the inanimate kingdom, we find nature's unerring, guiding hand.

(In my references to the animate and inanimate phases of manifestation, I am using the words as we understand them.

In reality, these divisions do not exist;

for all expressions of life are active.)

On every level (such as insect, bird, and animal), the Life Force animates all forms, which also have a certain reasoning power;

yet there is an eternal blending between this animate and inanimate phase.

And Man, the highest form of creation on earth, is dependent upon all.
