Let us digreas for a moment and discuss hynotism briefly.

Much publicity has been given lately to the practice of hypnotism for the purpose of recalling past lives.

Many believe that by using this means, they can send the subconscious back to read the Book of Memory.

But what does hypnotism really do?

In order for anyone to be hypnotized, he must voluntarily give up his will to the will of the hypnotist.

This can be extremely dangerous if repeated too often, for the will of the individual is weakened.

The sense-mind is stilled by hypnotism, and thereby opened to suggestions from the operator.

The sensory reactions are so subdued that you can suggest to a hypnotized person that ammonia smells like essence of roses, actually holding a bottle of it close enough for him to take deep breaths.

Under hypnosis the person will insist the aroma is pleasing, yet you will find that it is impossible not to recoil from the pungency of ammonia fumes while in a natural state.

The so-called memories revealed while under hypnosis are usually due to one of two conditions.

One, it is possible for the hypnotist unknowingly to suggest personal experience he has had to your mind;

or you may receive strong thoughts pertaining to something he has seen or read that has impressed itself deeply upon his consciousness.

Two, you may merely be recalling an incident that happened to you, which your sense-mind had forgotten;

or it may be some information you read or heard in early childhood.

We would be astounded at the information stored in our memories in this fashion.

Only outstanding events in our lives are retained in our active memory files.

Anyone can remember important happenings dating back to childhood;

but, unless something momentous occurred on that day, can you remember the details of what happened to you one year ago today?

Or, for that matter, can you recall every detail of a month ago today?

Yet, these details were itemized and catalogued in your memory, and can be recalled.

Lying dormant through the years may be a memory involving some incident (either major or minor), that happened to your parents or to a neighbor, and which was discussed in your presence when you were very young.

When a suggestion relative to any of these long-forgotten memories is given under hypnosis, they become readily accessible to us;

for everything we have ever read, or heard, or seen, is stored in the mind.

Hypnotism is an exact science.

In the hands of a competent person it is unsurpassed for the relief of pain.

It has proved invaluable in aiding psychologists and psychiatrists to untangle confused impressions that have been causing mental disturbances to the patient.

But it is not a parlor game!

When used as such, it can create drastic upheavals in our minds.
