I saw a lot of Japanese carrying expensive cameras today on the Ginza.
ロサンゼルスやニューヨークに住む米人たちは，ああまでカメラを持ち歩かないものだが――。
You never see people in Los Angeles or New York carrying cameras around like that.
それは地方から東京へ出てきた観光客じゃないの？
Those are probably people from the country out touring Tokyo.
いや，服装から見ると，そうでもないようだね。
No, judging by their clothing, I don't think so.
やはり東京の人だろう。
They must have been Tokyoites.
それも，みなすごくいいカメラを持っているんだ。
And they were carrying really good cameras.
ほんとに，日本というのは奇妙な国だわ。
Japan is really a strange country.
マッチ箱みたいなきたない小さな家に住んでいる日本人が，高級な車を乗り回したり，狭い部屋の中に大きな電子オルガンをおいたりしているんですもの。
People living in dirty little matchbox houses ride around in expensive cars and keep large electric organs in tiny rooms.
もっと住宅をよくすることに重点をおくべきだわ。
They should be more concerned with improving housing.

That's just where the problem lies.
住宅は欧米にくらべてひどく劣るんだが，芸術や文化は高度に発達しているんだ。
Compared to the U.S. and Europe, the housing is really inferior but culture and the arts are so highly developed.
大きなアンバランスがあるようだね。
There seems to be such a disparity.
全く日本は奇妙な国だわ。
Japan is such a strange country.
日本人という民族が私にはどうもよくわからない。
I just don't understand the Japanese people.
日本人は，おかしくもないときによく笑ったりするし――。
They laugh when there isn't anything humorous to laugh about.
ハハハ，あれは善意の笑いですよ。決して軽蔑の笑いじゃない。
Ha, ha, ha. That kind of laugh is well-intended and not meant to be disrespectful.
そうかしら。でも日本人は目の玉の色が黒いから，何を考えているのかわからないわ。
I wonder... But Japanese have black eyes, so you never know what they're thinking.

If you go into downtown Tokyo you can see some really rundown houses.
欧米人にはとても住めそうにもないような家に，みな平然として住んでいるわ。
The people there have no qualms about living in homes that Americans and Europeans couldn't possibly live in.
住宅や生活環境に対する観念が根本的に違うんだろうなあ。
There must be a fundamental difference in the ways of thinking about housing and living environments.
