雨が降ると,やはりタクシーに乗る人が多いんだなあ。
Whenever it rains, there are always so many people riding in taxis.

 

行列の間をすり抜けるときは「失礼します」と言うのがアメリカでは普通なのに,日本人は何も言わないで通り抜けていく。
In America, it's customary to say "Excuse me" when you cut through a line, but Japanese don't say anything.

 

人込みの中で体がぶつかっても,ほとんどの人は何も言わないんだ。
Even after bumping into others in a crowd, most people don't say anything.

 

日本人はすぐれた民族だが,こういうマナーになると,まだダメだな。
Japanese are a very superior people in many ways, but as far as manners are concerned, they still have a long way to go.

 

でも日本人は根本的には,おとなしい民族だ。
But Japanese are basically a quiet people.

 

超満員の電車ですし詰めにされても,みんな黙ってがまんしている。
Even when they are packed like sardines in a crowded train, they just endure it silently.

 

あれがニューヨークだったら暴動が起きるかもしれない。
If it were New York, violence might even erupt.

 

ニューヨークの地下鉄は危険だからなあ。
The New York subways are so dangerous.

 

それを思えば東京の地下鉄や電車は全ぐ安全だ。
If you think of that, the subways and trains in Tokyo are so safe that it's a cinch.

 

どんな民族でも長所や短所はあるんだ。
Any nation has its good points and its bad.

 

パリではタクシーに乗るのに,こんな行列などつくらないで,われがちに乗るんだからな。
In Paris, the people don't line up for taxis. It's every man for himself.

 

さあこんどはぼくの番だ。
It's my turn now.

 

タクシーが来たぞ。
Here comes the taxi.

 

日本のタクシーはりっぱだ。アメリカのタクシーはオンボロ車が多いんだが――。
Japanese taxis are quite impressive looking, but the taxis in the States are just heaps.

 

東京では料金を受けとって礼を言わぬ運転手が多いけれど,これもアメリカでは考えられぬことだ。
Most drivers in Tokyo don't say thank you when you pay the fare, but that's another thing that doesn't happen in the States.

 

なんとかならぬものかなあ。
I wonder if something can't be done about it.

 

郵便は来ていないかな?
I wonder if there's any mail.

 

おや,何も入っていないぞ,ミチコが先に帰ったのかな?
Hmm. There's nothing in the mailbox. I wonder if Michiko's home already.
