四つの感覚器官を持つ人間
The Four Senses of Man

想念伝達法はついてくわしく知らせてくれという手紙が全世界から私宛に殺到しました。
I have been deluged with letters from all parts of the world requesting information about thought-transference.

これらの手紙のほとんどは次のような質問を述べたものでした。「テレパシーとは何か？」「それはどんなふうに作用するのか？」「この想念伝達法を私も応用できるか？」
The vast majority of these have contained questions such as, "What is telepathy? How does it work? Could I learn to use this means of communication?"

他のテレパシー術者がどんな方法で理解したのか私は知りません。
I do not know by what method others attained their understanding.

私が言えるのは、私自身の方法をどのようのして習得したかということだけです。
I can only tell you how I achieved mine.

ずっと昔、まだ若かった頃、私はまずこの問題に興味を持つようになりました。ある人々がテレパシーにより通信できることを私は知っていました。
Many years ago when, as a youth, I first became interested in the subject, I knew some people could communicate telepathically.

私が知りたくてたまらなかったのは、いかなる方法によってテレパシーが行なわれるのかということでした。それで研究を始めたのです。
I wanted earnestly to know how this was done, so I began to study.

当時私は「人間は五感を持つ存在であって、それ以外に第六感などが発達する可能性が潜在している」という考えを持っていました。
At that time, I accepted the idea that man is a five-sensed being; with the potential of developing a sixth sense, etc.

この前提は古代からあったものですが、その頃にも普通に考えられていたことです。
This was the commonly accepted theory then, the premist of which had been laid in antiquity.
