真の推理能力を身につけること
真の推理は”前後の関連”を認める能力です。そしてその能力が生命に目的を与えるのです。
True reasoning is the faculty of recognizing sequence, which gives a purpose to life.
たとえば人間が自分の注意を想念のある面に向ける場合、自分がその特定な面をしっかりと捉えているかどうかを知ることが必要です。
For instance, when one turns his attention to a certain phase of thought, it is necessary for him to perceive whether he is holding to that particular phase.
自分の関心を同じような性質を持つ他の面にフラフラと向けてはいけません。というよりはむしろそれに印象づけられてはいけないのです。
He should not allow his interest to wander toward, or rather be impressed by, other phases which are of a similar nature.
かりにだれかが乳母車を作ろうという考えを起こしたとすれば、その車の移動を可能にする部分がイメージの状態の中に形を作り始めるまでは、本人はもとのままの想念の流れに固執するかもしれません。
For example, if a person received the idea of constructing a baby carriage, he may hold to the original thought-flow until the element of motion is beginning to take shape in the image state;
それから自分の注意をさまよわせ、同じような型の想念を自分の心に忍び込ませます。
then let his attention wander and allow a thought, of a similar type to slip into his mind.
製作品が完成して、自作の品をながめるために誇らしげにうしろヘ退いたとき、その乳母車に車輪のかわりに揺れ輪をとりつけたことを発見します。
When the product is finished, and he stands back proudly to survey his handiwork, he discovers he has put rockers instead of wheels on the carriage.
本人は車輪を作るべき段階に至るまではまったく元通りの印象に従っていたのです。
He had followed the original impression perfectly to the point where movement entered.
本人は移動させるための道具を作りあげることができませんでした。つまり、幼児を寝かしつけて眠らせることはできますが、
He did not achieve one means of motion - the infant can be lulled to sleep;
運ぶ物を作るという元通りの計画を完成しなかったのです。
but he did not accomplish his original plan of making a means of conveyance.

The general construction of the two objects is similar;

and reasoning, that power of recognizing the sequence of ideas, should have told him he had lost the trend of thought.
右の例では、ある点からあとは推理は全然用いられなかったとはっきりいうことができます。
In the preceding illustration we may safely say that after a certain point, reasoning was not used at all.
こんなことが起こる場合、それは通常訓練されていない意志か、またはまったく純粋な心の怠惰のいずれかによるのです。
When this happens it is usually due either to an untrained will, or to just pure mental laziness.
たしかにこれはこっけいな例ですが、もっと小さな同じような例が私たちの日常生活に起こっています。
Admittedly it is a ludicrous example, but similar examples on a smaller scale occur in our lives daily.
推理心をコントロールするということは、前述の心を”静める”という説明と同じ意味です。
Controlling the reasoning mind is what we meant when we spoke of "stilling" it.
私たちが推理心を自分の主人たるよりもむしろ召し使いたらしめるならば、生活という乳母車に揺れ輪をとりつけるようなことはしないでしょう。
