私の二人の知人がたがいに相談し合っている光景が私の心に映ったことがあります。
A mental picture appeared to me of a conference between two individuals with whom I was acquainted.
会合の行なわれている部屋がきわめて鮮やかに見えました。二人の声も、まるでその人たちが私のそばに立っているかのようにはっきりと聞こえるのです。
I saw the room in which the meeting was taking place very clearly, and the voices of both men were as distinct as if they were standing beside me.
二人のあいだにはかぎりない友情が溢れているように見え、たがいの取り引きはまったくまじめで紳士的なもののようでした。
There seemed to be the greatest friendliness between them, and their transaction appeared to be of the most sincere and amiable character.
しかし、一人が詐欺をたくらんでいることに私は気づきました。
But I became aware that a deception was being premeditated by one of the men.
どうしてこんな考えが私に起こったのかといいますと、
Why did this idea come to me?
問題の人はある件を慎重に話していましたけれども、心にいだいていたたくらみの念を無意識に放っていたために、私はその波動を感受したわけなのです。
I received the impression because the man in question, although deliberately saying one thing, was unconsciously broadcasting the scheme he had in mind.
物事を知るのに自分の聴覚器官に頼っていた他方の人は相手の話す言葉を信じました。
The other man, depending upon his auditory organs for enlightenment, believed the words he heard spoken.
しかし私は触覚経路を通じてその取り引き状況を感受することができたために詐欺を発見したのです。
But because I was able to receive the transaction through the feeling channel, I discovered the deception.
そこで、危うく騙されようとした人にこの印象を知らせて、イカサマを防ぐのに必要な処置をとらせることができました。
I revealed this impression to the intended victim, enabling him to take the necessary steps to guard against the fraud.
この特殊な例において詐欺の想念を私に感受させたのはいったい何だったのでしょう。
What was it that enabled me to receive the thought of deception in this particular case?
それは目でも耳でもありません。その会合は私の所からだいぶ離れた別な町で行なわれたからです。
It was not the eyes or ears, for the meeting took place in another city, some distance from me.
脳だったのでしょうか。ちがいます。
Was it the brain? No.
脳は肉体内の変圧器と増幅器にすぎません。
The brain is merely a transformer and amplifier within the body.
肉体に突きあたる波動はいずれも脳ヘ送られて意識的な知覚に変えられるというのは事実ですが、その波動の実際の感受作用は脳にかかっているのではなく、肉体の神経原形質内の触覚要素にかかっているのです。
While it is true that any vibration striking the body is carried to the brain to be transformed into conscious perception, the actual reception of that vibration does not depend upon the brain, but upon the element of feeling within the nerve plasm of the body.
この要素とは肉体を構成している原子核の生気すなわち魂です。
This element is that positive nuclear spark, or soul, of the atoms composing the physical body.
それで詐欺の想念が触覚経路を通って私にきたのです。
So the thought of deception came to me through the feeling channel.
感情というものが脳のみならず肉体全体にいかに影響をおよぼすかということを私はこれまでに説明しました。
We have shown earlier how emotions affect not only the brain, but the body as a whole.
肉体を構成する細胞のすべては想念にたいして反応を示します。
Every cell composing it reacts to the thought.
したがって、右に述べた透視の場合には、本人の心にある詐欺の想念がその人の肉体の細胞内にある種の化学変化を生じさせたのであり、
So in the case of the above mentioned mental picture, the thoughts of deception in the mind of the man produced certain chemical changes in the cells of his body;
そしてその肉体細胞から放たれる印象だけが感受されるわけです。
and impressions from his body cells alone could have been received.
しかし、右の持殊な例においてはその想念は実際には脳増幅器を通過したのであって、そのために空間の心という要素にもっと強力な波動を生み出したのです。
However, in this particular instance, the thought actually passed through the brain-amplifier, and therefore created more forceful waves in the mind-element of space.
この波動は無数の人々に一定の圧力をおよぼしたのですが無視されました。
These waves exerted definite pressures around innumerable people, yet they were ignored.
感受的な状態にあった一人──この場合は私自身ですが──は、自分の肉体に働きかけるこの圧力に気づき、なんらの妨げなしに脳ヘそれを伝達させて記録したのです。
One person - myself, in this case - being in a state of receptivity, became aware of this pressure acting upon my body, and allowed the transmission of it to register upon my brain without interruption.
