熱烈な精神集中は賢明でない

私たちがこれまでに教えられてきたのは、熱烈な精神集中こそ現世でいかなる物事でも達成できる唯一の方法であるということでした。
We have been taught that intense concentration is the onlymeans by which anything can be accomplished in this world.

また、ゆきあたりばったりな人はどんなに努力してもすぐれた人物にはけっしてなれないので、
We are told that the happy-go-lucky individual never becomes an outstanding figure in any line of endeavor;

私たちは体をすりヘらして死に物狂いの努力をしなければいけないとも聞かされていました。
so we should at all times keep our shoulder to the wheel, our eyes on the ball, and our nose to the grindstone (a most uncomfortable position).

しかし再度申しますが、このような教えが賢明でないことはいずれわかってくるでしょう。
But here again, we will find that we have been unwisely informed.

過去の歴史をふり返って、現在もなお人間の思想に影響を与えている偉大な人々に思いを駒せてみましょう。
Let us look into past history, back to the great minds still influencing our thinking today.

指導的大師たち、すなわちシャカ、イエス、アリストテレス、ソクラテス、プラトンなど数名だけをあげても、この人たちはみな一つの共通の才能を持っていたことがわかります。
Here, we find the Master Teachers: Buddha, Jesus, Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, to name but a few, all sharing one common faculty.

彼らは澄みきったバランスのとれた心の持ち主であり、
All were posssessors of serene, balanced minds;

その心のために物質というベールを透過し、現象を追求して真実の”宇宙の因”までもつきとめることができました。
which enabled them to pierce the veil of materiality and trace manifestation to its true Cosmic Source.

大事業王が自分の肉体をチリに返らせ、忘れ去られてからずっと後も、彼らの教えの言葉はいつまでも世界の運命に影響を与えつづけるでしょう。
Long after the big business tycoon has returned his body to the dust and been forgotten, their guiding words will continue to influence the destiny of the world throughout time.

万物は自由な元素の集結から生み出されるのであり、
It is true that all form is brought into being through a drawing together of free elements;

集中は現象の父であるということは事実です。
that concentration is the father of manifestation.

したがって私たちが想像しえるかぎりの最も小さな微粒子の中にもいかに大きな空間が存在するかを発見することだけに興味を持つならば、集中とは驚くべき現象です。
So if we are interested only in discovering how much space we can press into the smallest conceivable mass, concentration is a marvelous thing.

しかし私たちが達成しようと努力している目標はまだはるかに高いものであると私は思います。
But I sincerely hope that the goal for which we are striving is much higher.
