犬と猫のテレパシーによる会話

たとえば動物界のさまざまの種族はたがいに通信し合うことができるという事実を私たちは知っています。
For example: We know that different species of the animal kingdom are able to communicate with one another.

その動物たちは人間が用いているような言葉を口に出しはしませんが、自分の意志をきわめてはっきりと相手に伝えているのです。
They do not use a spoken language as we do, but they convey their meaning to each other very clearly.

私の友人が飼っていた小さな犬とつんぼの白ネコを私はよく覚えています。
I well remember a little fox terrier and a deaf white cat that belonged to friends of mine.

この二匹は離れがたい友だち同士で、ネコは何の物音にも反応を示さないつんぼでしたが、犬とたがいに通信しあう能力のある明確な証拠を示していました。
These animals were inseparable companions, and although the cat was as deaf as a post, they often gave positive proof of their ability to commune with each other.

この飼い主がちょっとしたゲームをやったのです。小さな犬には手のとどかぬようなテーブルの中央においしい食物を少しおきます。
It became quite a game with my friends to place a tasty titbit in the center of the table, well out of reach of the little dog.

家族の者は、テーブルのまわりをまわってにおいを嗅いでいる犬の動きにまったく無関心であるようなふりをしています。
The family would then pretend complete indifference to the action of the animal, who would circle the table, sampling the air.

自分の鼻が自分自身をあざむいていないことを確信すると、犬はネコを見つけようと急いで歩き出し、
When he was assured his nose was not deceiving him, he would trot off to find the cat.

椅子の上にまるくなって眠っているネコを探し出してつつき起こし、無言のまま明らかにネコと会話を始めます。
Upon locating her sleeping curled up in a chair, he would nudge her awake and silently obviously converse with her.

She would rise, stretch, and stalk across the room.

テーブルの中央に近づき、口に食物を一きれくわえて、待っている犬にそれを落としてやります。
One nimble leap would carry her to the center of the table, where she would pick up the morsel in her mouth and drop it to the waiting dog.

これでネコの仕事は終わったので、妨害されたうたた寝をふたたび始め、一方、犬は受けとった食物を満足して食べます。
Her task performed, the cat would resume her interrupted nap, while the dog chewed contentedly on the stolen food.

これは偶然の一致ではありません。なぜなら、このゲームはとてもおもしろいので飼い主は興味をおぼえた友人たちの前で何度もその動物たちにこのゲームをやらせていたからです。
This was no coincidence, for it so delighted the owners that they had the animals repeat it frequently for interested friends.

この場合、動物として種族の異なる犬とネコは、現象の世界の万物に自然にそなわっている宇宙語を使用しているにすぎません。
In this case the dog and cat, different species of the animal kingdom, were merely using the universal language which is natural to all forms of manifestation.
