テレパシーで生きる動物たち
さて、小鳥、昆虫、獣などを観察しつづけて私が気づいたのは、彼らは気候の変化が起こる前にこれを知っているという点です。
As I continued to watch the birds, insects and animals, I noticed they were alert to climatic changes before these took place.
それまで私は他の人と同じようにそれは本能なのだと考えて満足し、
Heretofore, I had been content, as were others, to say, instinct;
それを神秘的な超感覚的知覚作用の領域にあてはめていたのですが、
and relegate it to the realm of the mysterious extrasensory perceptions.
現在この答えはもう私を満足させません。
But now this answer no longer satisfied me.
当時私は地面の地形にたいしてカシの木に探知させ、正しい方向に根を導いた知覚力を理解したかったのです。
I wanted an understanding of the awareness that had alerted the seedling oak to the topography of the terrain, then guided its roots in the proper direction;
というのは、動物界においてもこれと同じ本能、すなわち知覚力がきびしい冬の到来をリスに知らせ、春まで生き抜くための余分の食糧を蓄えるように警告している事実を私はいまや見ることができたからです。
for I could now see that in the animal kingdom, this same instinct, or awareness, alerted the squirrel to the coming of a severe winter, warning him to store extra food to carry him through until spring.
万物の創造主の最高の表現物である人間が、なぜこの探知力を持たないのでしょうか？
Why did not man, the highest expression of the Creator of forms, participate in this alertness?
この解答は無言で、しかも確実な知識となってやってきました。
The answer came silently, yet with unmistakable knowing.
「受け入れようとしない人は、”宇宙の英知”にたいして自分の心を閉じているのだ」と。
Those who do not receive have closed their minds to the Cosmic Intelligence."
つづく私の疑問は次のようなものでした。「この”最高の英知”に気づくようになるのに、どうしたら自分の心を開くことができるだろうか？」
My problem then was, how could I open my mind to become aware of this Supreme Intelligence?
私は身近な物事を探究しつづけて、
I continued to study things close at hand;
同時に、私たちが一小部分にすぎない太陽系にまでも思いを馳せたのでした。
at the same time letting my thoughts encompass the solar system of which we are only a small part.
それは広大無辺の”宇宙全体”にほんの一歩を踏み出したにすぎません。
From there, it was but another step into the infinite vastness of the Cosmic Whole.
万物の中にけっして分裂による断絶のない、たえまなき融合を私は見い出しました。
Throughout all creation I found a constant blending, with never a dividing break.
したがって私は孤立することができず、むしろ万物と一体だったのです。
Therefore, I could not stand apart, but was one with creation.
この悟りによって次のことが明らかになりました。つまり、万物が人間の内部に貯蔵されていて、解答は人間が自分自身をよく知るようになるにつれてあらわれるということです。
This revelation made it apparent that all was contained within man, and the answer lay in his becoming better acquainted with himself.
「自分自身を知れ。そうすればあらゆることがわかるだろう」という有名な言葉を私は思い出しました。
I recalled the well-known adage, "Man know thyself, and all things shall be revealed unto you."
そのときまでは私もまたこの言葉の無限の深さに気づかぬままに、この深遠な真理をただオォウム返しにくり返していたのです。
Until then I, too, had parroted this profound truth, unaware of the immensity of its depths.
しかしいまや私は、無言ではあるけれども到る所に存在する”宇宙の共通語”にたいするカギを自然界が持っていることを悟りました。
But now I realized that Nature held the key to the Cosmic universal language; silent, yet everywhere present;
そして私の求める理解を見い出し得た場所は、この現象の世界だったのです。
and it was here in the manifested world that I could find the understanding for which I searched.
私の分析はつづきました。
My analysis continued.
私の人間としての肉体はこの”宇宙の英知”によって存在せしめられたのですから、他の自然物とともに私もまたその英知の法則の恩恵に浴しているにちがいありません。
Since my human form had been brought into being by this Cosmic Intelligence, I, along with other forms of nature, must have inherited its laws and benefits, as well as its intelligence.
そうすると、なぜ私はこれらの天性に容易に目覚めなかったのでしょうか。
Then why did I not have ready access to these birthrights?
科学的に見て人体は人間が複製することのできない驚異的な構造を持つものであることを私は知っていました。
I knew that scientifically the human body was a marvel of construction beyond the duplication of man.
私たちが食べる食物のエッセンスを日々抽出し分配する、いわば肉体内の化学研究所の働きも、肉体の果たす小さな機能の一つにすぎませんが、それさえも科学者はまだ充分に理解していないのです。
Just one small function of the body, which scientists do not fully understand, is the working of the "chemical laboratories" within us which daily extract and distribute the essence of the foods we eat.
これだけでも肉体の自然の活動は”宇宙の英知”のいろいろな法則に従っているという証拠になります。
This alone is proof that the natural actions of the body obey the laws of Cosmic Intelligence.
そうしますと、推理する心はまったく現象の世界に沈み込んでしまい、同時にその根源を見失ってしまっているということになります。
It must then follow that the reasoning mind has become so immersed in the material world of effect, it has temporarily lost sight of its origin.
たしかに人間は「自分のよき才能を隠している」のです。
Man did indeed "hide his light under a bushel."
次に私が直面した仕事は、この誤った考え方を追放すること、潜在する”宇宙の因”の実在を認めることにありました。
The task confronting me now was the shedding of this false conception, and a recognition of the existence of the underlying Cosmic Cause.
そこで私は自分の心と肉体をいっそうよく理解しようとしました。
So I sought a better understanding of my mind and my body;
それらはどんなふうに作用するのか、それらの存在の目的は、といった事柄です。
how they operate and their purpose for being.
この一連の探究によって私は次のような認識に到達しました。「私を存在せしめた創造主は、力をともなった”宇宙の英知”である」
This line of investigation led me to the realization that it was Cosmic Intelligence, coupled with a force, that was the creator of my being.
