人間は恐怖に支配されている

心は知識と信念の欠乏によってひき起こされる恐怖を通じて働いています。大抵の場合そうなのです。
The mind acts as it does mostly through fear caused by a lack of knowledge and faith.

なぜなら、心は変化しても、次の瞬間にはどのようになるかを心自体が知らないからです。
For if it changes, it knows not what the next moment might be like.

恐怖が心の主人となっていて、何らかの形で地球上のほとんどあらゆる人間を支配しています。
Fear is the master of the mind and governs nearly every human being on earth, in one form or another.

恐怖が支配的な要素になっているということに気づいている人はほとんどいません。これは人間が長いあいだ恐怖という家族の子供となってきており、いまはそれを当然の生き方だと思っているからです。
Very few people realize that fear is a dominant factor for we have been children of its household for centuries and now feel that it is a natural way of life.

人間はみずからが恐れているということにさえ気づいていません。恐怖とは生命を支配する諸法則に対する理解力の欠乏にすぎません。
We do not even know that we fear, yet fear is nothing but a lack of understanding of the laws that govern life.

われわれはこの諸法則を結果（現象）の研究、特に人間の体験の研究によって学ぶことはできません。
And these laws cannot be learned by studying effects, especially of human experiences.

これらはほとんど恐怖の指令の結果であるからです。
For most of these are the result of fear dictation.

フランクリン・Ｄ・ルーズベルトはこれを次のように巧みに表現しています。「恐怖そのもの以外に、恐怖すべきものは存在しない」
F.D.R. expressed it well when he said, "there is nothing to fear but fear itself.

恐怖は恐怖を促進するからです。
For fear promotes fear.

故ケネディー大統領は国民に次のようにいっています。「国家があなたに何を成し得るかではなく、あなたが国家に何を成し得るかが問題である」
Our late President Kennedy made the statement, "Ask not what the Nation can do for you but what you can do for the Nation.

私ならこう言いたいところです。「神があなたに何をなすかではなく、あなたが神に何をなすのか？」と。
I would say it this way; it is not what God will do for you but what will you do for God?

神とは人間の意識です。
And God is the consciousness of our being.

そこで次のようにも言えます。「意識が心に何をなすかではなく、心が意識に何をなし得るかが問題である」
Or we could put it this way, it is not what the consciousness does for the mind, but what the mind can do for the concsiousness.

われわれはみな人生を難儀な目にあいながらすごしています。
All of our life we have been doing things the hard way.

ときとして極端に困難になることもあります。
Either in one extreme or another.

しかしいまや意識という永遠の中央通りに落ち着くときがきています。
Now the time has come to settle down into the middle, which is the conscious eternal highway.

心という側道は避けなければなりません。中心のバランスが生活をはるかに容易にするからです。
And stop taking the mental by-ways, for the center balance will make life much easier.

この中央通りで万物が創造主の英知を表現していることがあなたはわかるでしょう。
On this highway we shall find that all creation expresses a Divine intelligence.

意識は砂一粒の生命でもあるからです。
For consciousness is the life of even a grain of sand.

意識は万物と独立しているものなのですが、しかも万物を生かしています。
It lives independent of forms, yet it activates all matter.

それはわれわれが印象と呼んでいる無言の言語で語っていますが、いかなる音響よりもはるかに大きな力を持って働いています。
It speaks the silent language which we call impressions, yet moves with a force far greater than any sound.

そしてあなたも私もその最高の現れです。意識がなければ心は存在しなくなると思われるからです。
And you and I are the highest manifestations of it, for without consciousness the mind would be nothing.
