自然界の指導のもとに帰ること
私が”自然”と呼ぶとき、それは神の母性原理の代表者として用いられます。
When we say Nature, it is used as a representative of The Mother Principle of Divinity.
自然は万物を生み出した母体であるからです。
For she is the one through which forms are born.
これは生命の女性面であり、一方”至上なる英知”は男性面です。
This is the feminine side of life, while the Supreme Intelligence is the masculine.
そしてこの二つは多くの現象を生み出すために一体となって働いています。
And the two are working as one to bring forth the many manifestations.
われわれにわかるように、生命の九〇パーセントは直接指導の法則によって支配されています。
Ninety per cent of life as we see it is governed by the law of direct guidance.
人間の部分を占める残りの一〇パーセントは自身の自由意志を用いることによってその法則から自分を切り離しています。
The 10% which is man, has separated himself from the law by using his free-will.
地球上の最初の人間が生活の道にそって自分を導く教師を持たなかったとしましょう。そこで彼は教師として自然を利用しなければなりませんでした。
Let us assume that the first man on earth did not have a teacher to guide him along the path of life, so he had to use nature as a teacher.
つまりさまざまな種類の葉を持つ木々のあいだを流れる風の音を聞きながら、彼は各風がそれぞれ異なる音をたてることに気づきます。
i.e. As he listened to the winds passing through the trees with their varying types of leaves, he noticed that each produced a different sound.
また鳥の声や小川のせせらぎ、その他の自然が作り出す物音を聞きながら彼はそうした音を作り出そうとします。
And as he listened to the birds and the rushing waters of the brooks and rivers, and other sounds that nature produces, he desired to reproduce the sounds.
そこで笛のような物を作り、後には他の楽器類を作ります。
So he made a flute type whistle and later other instruments.
結局、人間は自分の創造主のようになりたいのであって、
Man inately desires to become as his Creator.
それでこそこれまで自然は人間の最高の教師であったのです。
So nature has been his greatest teacher.
現代でも人間は海底や大気圏外へと活動しますが、これはまったく自然から学びたいからにほかなりません。
Even today man is going into the depths of the ocean and into space, only to learn from nature.
ところが、人間の学習の最も不幸な部分は、エゴが短気であり、エゴ自体を自己の教師すなわち創造主の上位に置こうとする態度にあります。
The most unfortunate part of man's learning is that his ego is impatient and tries to exalt itself above his teacher or Creator.
人間のおかす最大の過失はこの点にあるのです。”父の（神の）意志”のかわりに自分の意志を応用し、こうして物事を簡単にしないで複雑にしているのです。
And it is here that he makes his biggest mistakes, for he applies his will instead of Thy Will, and thus complicates things instead of simplifying them.
人間は、自己の教師であり万物の生命でもある意識に従わないで、生徒であるべきはずの自分の心に従っていますが、
He follows his mind which should be a pupil, instead of the consciousness which is the teacher and the life of every form.
人間にとって唯一の救いは自然のもとへ帰ることにあります。
And yet his only salvation is to return back to Nature's guidance.
人間はいかに多くを学び、いかに年齢を重ねても絶対に自然から離れることはできないのです。
For he can never become independent of it no matter how much he learns or how old he becomes.
自己の知識を評価する基準は自然であらねばなりません。
It will have to be nature by which he evaluates his knowledge.
現在あらゆる探究の分野に学者がいますが、学者のすべては自然の要素と生命体の生産を探究することによって自己の知識を求めるのに自然に頼る必要があります。
Today we have scholars and learned men in all fields of endeavor, but all of them have to depend upon nature for their knowledge by studying nature's material and production of form life.
また人間は生活それ自体を自然に頼らねばならないので、自分のエゴよりも自然を指導者にする必要があるのです。
And since man must depend upon nature for life itself, then it behoves him to let nature, rather than his ego, guide him.
いいかえれば自分の心のかわりに意識を自己の指導者にするべきです。
Or let his consciousness be his guide instead of his mind.
体験からしてわれわれは自然が”至上なる英知”によって支配されていることを知っています。
From experience we know that nature is governed by the Supreme Intelligence.
そこで英知という言葉に返ることにしましょう。われわれはあらゆる状況からして人間が英知を表現していると考えてよいでしょう。しかし人間が自己を表現するとき、われわれは自分の考え方の誤りに気づきます（訳注＝人間のなかにはまるで知能のない者がいるように見えることもあるの意）。
So let us go back to the word intelligence; We may look upon a man that from all appearances represents intelligence, yet when he expresses himself we realize our mistake.
だが謙虚で上品な人を見ると、われわれにはその人の表現から本人がまったく知的であるように見えます。
Yet when looking upon an unassuming, unimposing man we find from his expression that he is quite intelligent.
そこで人間は表現または行為によって知能を分類しているわけです。
So we do classify intelligence by expression or action.
