心というジャングル

こうした人たちはうっそうと茂った森林のなかで道に迷った人に似ています。そこでは繁茂した樹木が、正しい方角を示してくれるはずの太陽や天空の光景を隠しています。
These people are like a man lost in a heavily wooded forest where the congested growth hides the sun and the vision of heaven that could lead him in the right direction.

樹木は、道を示してくれるはずの光をさえぎる”個人的な意見”にたとえてよいでしょう。
The timbers could be likened to personal opinions that blocks the vision of light that could show the way.

こんな状態のなかで死んでしまって生命の真の目的を知ることのない人もあるでしょう。
A person may even die in this state and never know the true purpose of life.

この世のなかには必要以上の莫大な財産を持ちながら、本人の内部はきわめて不幸だという人がいます。
We have people who have everything that the world has to offer, even security beyond their needs, but they are very unhappy within themselves.

そして自分が理解していないものを求めて生涯探し続けます。
They have searched all of their lives for something they did not understand.

本人は身の保障のために富と名誉とを求めたのですが、それを所有した後も切望した幸福はやってきません。本人が”自我の意見”にすぎない森林地帯を脱していないからです。
They sought wealth and fame for security but after having this, the happiness they longed for was not there because they had never left the timber land of self opinions.

したがって本人の人生の価値は宇宙と一致していません。
And their values of life are out of line with the cosmos.

自分が探し求めている物は実は自分の”半身”なのであって、”自身の個人的意見”という暗黒の中では発見できないということを本人はほとんど知っていません。
Little did they know that what they were searching for was the other half of themselves which was not to be found in the darkness of their own opinions.

なぜなら、これは本人が全然楽しんだことのない意識という光の中で発見されるからです。
For this is found in the light of consciousness which they never did enjoy.

しかもその光は常時存在していて、ときどき森林地帯の暗黒をつらぬくのですか、本人はそれを見ることも理解もしません。
Yet it was always there, for every now and then the light would penetrate the darkness of the wooded country, but they failed to see and understand it.

ところが意識という光に従って出口を発見し、広野の自由を感じてそれを楽しむ人もいます。
There are those who have followed the light of consciousness and found the way out and felt and enjoyed the freedom of the open country.

こうしてこの人たちはそれまでけっして知らなかった永久の保障を体験します。
And thus they experienced a lasting security that was never known before.

しかし自分が何を発見したかに気づかない人は再び暗黒の地帯へ引き返して結局は迷ってしまうのです。
Yet others not realizing what they had found, returned back into the darkened land only to be lost again.

こうして彼らは暗黒の森林を作り続け、そのために時が経過するに従って出口を見つけるのがますます困難になります。
And they continue to create forests of darkness through which it will be harder to find the way as time goes on.

以上のことから死んだ妻のメリーが体験した一事件を私は思い出します。ある夜メリーはわずか半エーカーばかりの土地に高く生い茂っているライラックのジャングルの中で道に迷ったのです。
This recalls an incident which happened to my wife Mary, who has since passed away, when she became lost at night fall in a jungle of high wild lilac which covered only a half acre of land.

彼女は恐れて大声で助けを求めました。家から四五十メートルしか離れていない場所なのに──。
She became frightened and called for help, even though she was only about 500 yards from home.

このことは、宇宙の目的に反する”自我の意見”というジャングル中で人間というものがいかに迷いやすいかという例としてあげました。
This is used only as an example to show how easily one can become lost in a jungle of self opinions which are contrary to cosmic purpose.

人類の九九パーセントがこの種の”心というジャングル”のなかで生きているというのは不幸なことです。
It is unfortunate that 99% of the human kind are living in this kind of a jungle of the mind.

この人たちが自分の半身である意識を楽しむことができるならば、それは（意識は）人間が必要とするあらゆる物を持っていることがわかるでしょう。
When they could enjoy the consciousness, the other part of themselves that has everything that the human will ever need.

心をつなぎとめている恐怖というものをのがれて生活を楽しむことができるからです。
For they could enjoy a life free from fear, with which the mind is shackled.

高貴な異星人にかわって私がここで言えることが一つあります。それは、彼ら異星人の心は宇宙の意識に従っているということです。
There is one thing we can say for the noble space people, their minds follow the consciousness of the cosmos.

たとえ心の行使がいまは完全ではないにしても、彼らはいつかは完全に行使するようになるでしょう。彼らは意識の指導に従っているからです。
And even though they are not perfect in its execution, they will be in time for they follow the guidance of consciousness.

次の第６講では若々しい肉体を保つために”新鮮さ”の重要性について説明しましょう。
In the next lesson I will explain the importance of newness in order to maintain a youthful body.
